Learning and career development

Our people drive our success, and in a world that is changing fast, new skills to help us shape that change will be needed. This means we will provide you with opportunities to learn, grow and develop your career.

A culture of careers

You are the driver of the career you want, you will have the support of your managers and HR partners throughout that journey. We encourage you to take time to understand your performance, motivational drivers, aspirations, capability, and potential in order to find the best opportunities suited to you.

A variety of opportunities

The diversity of businesses across ABF provides a unique range of opportunities for our people.  We encourage you to get as much as you can from each role you do. As you develop, evolving or expanding the responsibilities of your role will present stretch and challenge.

We have a range of tools available across the Group to support great career conversations with your managers.  These tools include thinking prompts, discussion planners, a Career Conversations Website that showcases what the group has to offer, stories and advice from your colleagues and advertises jobs.

Helping our people learn

The learning journey starts on day one with induction programmes and continues on pathways that best suit each individual. Our training is wide ranging, and varies from role to role, and person to person.

The focus is on building skills and interpersonal effectiveness, as well as addressing specific topics such as health and safety, mental health, driving safety and food safety. Where needed we offer leadership training, coaching or mentoring. Training is delivered in a variety of ways, from traditional classroom tuition, on the job, to e-learning.

Responsible learning

We will develop you to understand responsible business in general and on topics specific to your role. For example, our central procurement team offers modern slavery awareness training for buyers across the group, and our legal team ensure you are up to date on Anti bribery and corruption if you are in a sales or leadership role.

We have a variety of learning packages to help you understand and implement our Supplier Code of Conduct, these include human rights, grievance mechanisms and gender-based injustices.

Building skills

Where our businesses require specific skills we work with partners to help us find and develop people keen to build a career in these fields. Some of our businesses have apprentice programmes in engineering and food science, or run training in technical skills.
